The Magpie Project supports pre-school children and their migrant mums who are living in temporary or insecure accommodation in the London Borough of Newham and surrounding boroughs.

Funding from The Lewin Trust will help to launch a new project supporting children who are displaying delayed social, emotional, and physical development, and/or emerging special educational needs, through enhanced play and targeted support from specialist healthcare professionals. It will ensure that children living in families who face multiple barriers to accessing healthcare are plugged into the services – speech and language, occupational therapy, health visitors, etc – they need and to which they are entitled, and, where relevant, support their families as they navigate healthcare pathways towards SEND diagnosis.

The project will ensure that the needs of children’s with developmental delays and emerging SEN are met at the earliest possible opportunity, while healthcare professionals will gain a better understanding of the specific challenges this group of families face in accessing their services and how they should tailor their provision accordingly.
