Addressing Zimbabwe’s birth registration is one of the nation’s most pressing needs. 51% of children under 5 are not registered and so do not exist in the eyes of the state. This renders them vulnerable for life. With the support of The Lewin Trust, Zimbabwe Educational Trust and our grass-roots partner Trinity Project are delivering a three-year series of interventions which will:
- Register 5,700 cases for children and vulnerable families.
- Ensure 4,260 community members have improved understanding of the process and their responsibilities and increase their valuation of birth registration.
- Improve the operational space by working with duty bearers, stakeholders, key community members and more to ensure a higher standard of joined-up and accessible services.
- Press for the alignment of national law with national and local policy.
With these interventions we will ensure that registered children can go to school, can call the police to help them, can claim their inheritance when they are orphaned, can receive welfare, can access formal employment opportunities including fair pay and good conditions, can exercise their right to vote, and can live a full life.
