Able Child works with a network of organisations to protect, educate and amplify the voices of children with disabilities in East and Southern Africa, so that they are able to thrive. The charity works to remove the barriers that prevent children with disabilities from accessing education, protection, and opportunities by supporting local organisations to safeguard children from abuse, promote inclusive and high‑quality learning, and amplify the voices of children and young people so they can advocate for their own rights. At the heart of Able Child’s work is a commitment to making sure that no child with a disability is left behind, and that every child is valued, heard, and supported to reach their full potential.
Our ‘Unlocking Potential’ project pilots the rollout of a digital toolkit supporting inclusive Early Childhood Education in Uganda. With funding from the Lewin Trust, we have developed a digital version of a combined early years child functioning assessment and individualised education plan tool. In the first year this has included training 24 teachers on how to use the tool, which they are now testing using tablets in their classrooms. In the project’s second year the tool will continue to be tested and adapted before working with the Ugandan government to integrate it within their systems, with an aim of improving access to education for children with disabilities across Uganda.
