At The Lullaby Trust, our Care of Next Infant (CONI) programme provides specialist practical and emotional support for families welcoming a new baby after a sudden and unexpected death in infancy (SUDI). For families affected by SUDI, the joy of another pregnancy is often accompanied by fear that history will repeat itself. Many parents experience intense anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and isolation, yet there is no guaranteed statutory support available to help them through this journey. Without support, parents may struggle to bond with their new baby, leading to future emotional and relational challenges.
Through CONI, trained health visitors provide families with enhanced support, including tailored baby safety advice, emotional reassurance, and practical tools such as a baby breathing monitor, weight chart, and room thermometer. Families also receive resuscitation training and have fast-tracked healthcare access through our CONI Healthcare Passport. Together, the CONI package of support helps to build parents’ confidence, reduce feelings of isolation, and enable families to cope more effectively with worries about their new baby. Thanks to our generous supporters, CONI transforms the early months with a new baby from a time of worry into a time of hope for hundreds of families every year.
