In Zanzibar, a significant number of children face a challenging reality due to undiagnosed hearing loss. This often leads to a cycle of compromised education, social isolation, and persistent poverty.
Crucially, without early intervention, these children’s full potential remains untapped, perpetuating disadvantage and severely limiting their future opportunities.
IMPACT Foundation is committed to preventing this needless disability. Their comprehensive programme includes screening 3,000 babies each year for hearing loss and ensuring that impairments are detected early.
In addition, 30 severely hearing-impaired children are enrolled at IMPACT’s dedicated Academy for Deaf Children. Here, students from pre-school to the age of 11 receive a comprehensive education that includes hearing aid provision, specialised education, targeted speech therapy, and crucial sign language training.
Beyond the classroom, IMPACT actively addresses practical barriers by providing transportation for students and offering essential communication skills training to their families.
These integrated efforts lead to significant improvements in the children’s language development, reducing social isolation and enhancing their overall quality of life, ultimately breaking the cycle of poverty frequently associated with undiagnosed disability.
