Mothers Matter in Childbirth

Fountain of Peace Children’s Foundation works in the poverty stricken west of Uganda providing hope and a secure future, in a Christian environment, for orphaned, abandoned, and other critically vulnerable children. The Mothers Matter in Childbirth project is committed to working in the poorest villages where avoidable maternal death during childbirth and the immediate postnatal period is so prevalent, often leading to a very high level of abandonment of babies. Identifying the main reasons for delay in accessing healthcare as the prime causes for loss of life, we have been able to train teams of Village Health workers to provide health education in the villages, as well as to provide a reliable mode of transport for all mothers in labour to reach a remote health facility for delivery. We have also been able to fund more midwives and better equipment at the facility. This has resulted in a 100% survival rate with over 1200 deliveries to December 2025 against an estimated potential loss of life of 60-70 mothers, in addition to their babies. The success of this is reflected in a reduction in abandonment of infants in the villages.

As an extension of the scheme, we have launched a full antenatal care service in the community to identify at-risk mothers early. Due to the success of the project, as of 2026 we are launching further afield into the neighbouring sub-county. Through this programme we are confident that awareness of health issues around maternity care has been greatly enhanced, so encouraging the village folk to take a greater interest in their overall health.
